Use AI to generate video clips in Google Vids

With AI in Google Vids, you can create and modify video clips as you want. You can generate a new clip from a text prompt using reference images or avatars, animate a static image, edit an uploaded video, or extend a clip adding more actions.

To generate a video clip from images, existing video clips, prompts, and ingredients, use "Generate video" in Google Vids. Generated videos have these specifications:

• 24fps frame rate
• 720p resolution
• Aspect ratio:
  • Landscape (Widescreen): 16:9
  • Portrait (Vertical): 9:16

Most users can generate up to 50 videos per month. The monthly limit resets at 12 AM PT on the first day of the month. For Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra with family sharing, the monthly limit is shared. Learn more about generation limits.

Generate a video clip with AI

With AI in Google Vids, you can generate a new clip from a text prompt using reference images or avatars.

1. Open Google Vidson your computer.
2. From the start menu, select Create AI videos.
   • Or, in an existing video, on the right, select AI video .
3. In the side panel, select Create.
4. Optional: To add reference images to your video clip, select Ingredients and upload up to 7 images.
5. Optional: To use an avatar (including its voice) as an ingredient: Select Avatar .
6. Enter a text prompt. Describe how to incorporate your ingredients, if any. Include details such as the subject, location, action, camera, lighting, dialogue, sounds, and tone. For example:
   • "Create a short clip of this avatar walking in a field wearing a tshirt with this farm logo”. "
   • "A dog driving a race car in Italy at sunset with loud engine roars."
7. Optional: To change the aspect ratio, below the prompt select Landscape or Portrait. (The generated video clip’s aspect ratio matches your Vid canvas by default.)
8. Click Generate .
9. Optional: Edit your text prompt to make changes.
10. To add the video clip to your Vid, below the video select Insert
11. Optional: To use this prompt again, select Recreate .
12. Optional: You can control the video clip timeline from its own track at the bottom of your Vid.

Tip: To access and edit the generated video clip after each session, insert it into your Vid.

Animate an image into a video clip with AI

Important: Generated video clips are only available in landscape or portrait orientation.

You can animate an uploaded .jpg or .png image into an 8-second clip. To get the best result, use a high-quality source image and a clear, detailed text prompt for motion.

Vids automatically adds black bars if your image has a different ratio than the nearest supported aspect ratio.

1. Open Google Vids on your computer.
2. From the start menu or side panel, select Create AI videos.
   • Or, in an existing video, on the right, select AI videos .
3. In the side panel, select Animate.
4. Optional: To change the aspect ratio, select Landscape or Portrait.
5. Select Add image .
6. Select an image.
7. Add a description. Describe how you want to animate the image into a video. For example: On an image depicting a dog: "The dog moves around naturally."
8. Select Generate.
9. Optional: To make changes edit your text prompt.
10. To add the video clip to your Vid, hover over the generated video and select Insert .
11. Optional: You can control the video clip timeline from its own track at the bottom of your Vid.

You can animate an uploaded .jpg or .png format image into an 8-second clip. To get the best result, you can:

• Use one of these supported aspect ratios:
  • Landscape: 16:9
  • Portrait: 9:16
• Use a high-quality source image. A sharp, clear image gives a more coherent result.
  • The quality, composition, and style of your uploaded image sets the visual direction of the video.
• Enter a clear and detailed text prompt for motion.
  • Instead of re-describing the scene, your text prompt should describe how the elements move or how the camera moves through the scene. Redundant description confuses the AI model.

Tip: If you upload an image with a different ratio, Vids automatically adds black bars to the video clip to fit the nearest supported aspect ratio.

Edit a video clip with AI

Edit a video to get the video you need.

Important: Users of this feature in European Economic Area, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Illinois, and Texas cannot upload and edit videos using this feature. Users in these regions may only use this feature to edit AI generated videos in their generation history.

1. Open Google Vids on your computer.
2. From the start menu, select Create AI videos.
   • Or, in an existing video, on the right, select AI video .
3. In the side panel, select Edit.
4. Select Add video and select video file to upload a video file to edit.
   • If the uploaded video is over 10 seconds, only the last 10 seconds will be edited.
5. Optional: To add reference images or an avatar to your video clip, select Add and upload up to 3 images.
   • To use an avatar (including its voice) as an ingredient: Select Avatar .
6. Optional: To change the aspect ratio, below the prompt select Landscape or Portrait.
7. Select Generate .

Extend a video clip with AI

With AI in Google Vids, you can extend a clip adding more actions. 

1. Open Google Vids on your computer.
2. From the start menu, select Create AI videos.
   1. Or, in an existing video, on the right, select AI Video .
3. In the side panel, select a video clip generated during this session.
4. Below the clip in the side panel, select Extend .
5. Enter a prompt describing the video's continuation. For example, “then the cat walks outside.”
6. Submit the prompt.

Check Avatar availability

To get the best results generating video clips:

• Include the subject and tone.
• Use a prompt that's clear and precise.
• Include rich descriptions and cinematic language. Instead of "A car on a road," try: "Wide shot, eye-level, static camera focused on a red race convertible driving along with the camera down the center of an empty, paved road at dusk. The sky is a gradient from deep twilight blue overhead to warm orange and pink hues near the horizon. The car's red tail lights are illuminated."
• Refine your prompt until you reach your desired result.
• Review your session history. You can find the history of your generated prompts and videos from the current session. This allows you to compare, refine, and reuse your creations easily.

  Tip: When you close the Vids tab, the history disappears.
